For those of you who have been to our studios or to one of our on-the-go studio classes you know that all of us at Kidcreate Studio aren’t shy when it comes to making a mess!  But what you may not know (although I’m sure it’s no surprise) is that we get messy at home quite a bit too. So when I found a recipe for homemade Model Magic, you guessed it, my kids and I had to make it!

If you’re not familiar with Model Magic you’re really missing out! It’s non-toxic air dry clay made by Crayola. It’s light weight, colorful and dries to a hard finish in about 24 hours. Kids love the stuff! Even, parent’s love to play with the stuff! The only downside to Model Magic is that it’s a bit on the pricey side.  That is one of the reasons why I was excited about this homemade recipe.

(We would like to apologize to the person who developed this recipe for not giving them the credit they deserve- it’s amazing!!! The problem is, We just can’t remember where I found the recipe. So, if this is your invention, let us know so we can acknowledge you!)

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 1 cup cornstarch + additional for kneading
  • 1-1/2 cups cold water
  • food coloring-   5-10 drops depending on desired color

1) Combine all the ingredients in a large sauce pan.

2) Heat the mixture over medium heat, whisking constantly until it starts to bubble and thickens into a dough-like consistency.

3) Transfer the dough into a bowl.

 4) Cover the bowl with a wet towel until it cools.

5) Knead the dough on a surface dusted with cornstarch until it is no longer sticky to the touch. Additional cornstarch may be needed.
Warning: Your hands might become discolored from the food coloring.

6) The air dry clay is now ready to be poked, rolled, pinched and sculpted into a masterpiece.
